As the final chapter of The Midnight Gathering unfolds, guests descend the grand staircase of Kathbell Estate and prepare to step once more into the night. Before crossing the threshold, each is given a candle—a final measure of protection against anything that may have followed them from the séance room.
Scented with white sage and lavender, botanicals long associated in various traditions with cleansing, protection, and tranquility, the candle fills the room with an herbal, calming fragrance as its flame burns against a dramatic black glass vessel.
Its engraved bamboo lid bears the daisy wheel, a centuries-old geometric motif found on historic buildings and commonly interpreted as an apotropaic, or protective, mark intended to ward against misfortune or unwanted forces. Within The Midnight Gathering, it becomes the symbol carried throughout the collection—a boundary between those gathered inside the circle and whatever may linger beyond it.
The candle's story also echoes the extraordinary fascination with Spiritualism during the Victorian and Gilded Age eras, when séances and attempts to communicate with the departed entered parlors and drawing rooms on both sides of the Atlantic. The Midnight Gathering imagines what might have happened after one such evening—when the guests had made their contact, the circle had been broken, and everyone was left with the same unsettling question:

Due to the limited and carefully sourced nature of our collections, we do not offer exchanges.
If your item arrives damaged or defective, we are happy to make it right. Please contact us within 14 days of delivery at support@houseofkathbell.com with your order details and a photo of the item, and we will arrange a free reshipment, refund, or store credit. No need to send the item back.
Items that are made to order or fulfilled by select partners may be considered final sale unless they arrive damaged.
